YOUTH Education Programs

We have a variety of kids educational programs to engage youth with food skills and increase food literacy. Programs primarily run in the spring, summer and fall months as we get into the gardens. Our mission is to connect Revelstoke youth with where their food comes from and give them skills to grow their own food.

Our kids programming runs through local pre-schools, SD19 elementary schools and Revelstoke Secondary School.

Little Sprouts (Ages 3-5)

Little Sprouts Preschool Program teaches children aged 3-5 about where their food comes from, and gives them a chance to get their hands dirty (literally)! The program runs through school visits and at the Downtown Community Garden (Third & MacKenzie). Topics covered:

  • Growing starters from seeds.

  • Learning about sunlight + growing.

  • Transferring starts to the garden (getting dirty hands!).

  • Weeding & watering.

  • Harvesting (through the summer months).

Garden parties throughout the summer build on their school visits by discovering a variety of garden topics such as pollination, herbs, compost and harvesting. The program culminates either through donation of the harvest to the food bank, or with the sale of their produce on a farmer’s market day. The program is free to participants and any funds raised are used to cover expenses of the program.

Growing Gardeners (Grade 5-12)

This is a made-in-Revelstoke program aimed at both grade 5 students, as well as grade 10 and grade 12 food & science students. This program teaches students the connection between climate change and food choices over a series of classroom visits, farm tours and field-trips . Hands on learning modules, creative activities and thought-provoking challenges speak to every type of learner. The LFI believes that children have the potential for great change in our world and that teaching them about how the food system works opens opportunities to positively impact the world through our daily choices.

Micro Growers Youth Camp

Our youth summer camps have run for two years: The Micro-growers!

Over July and August our Coodinators took local youth to local farms and gardens to learn about our local food system and enjoy some of the local produce our incredible community grows. In 2024 we introduced a foraging and nature day, with our campers meeting at the Nordic Lodge. Our campers also learnt kitchen skills, making fun treats and eating veggies straight from the gardens.

The camp will be back in summer 2025! Look out for dates and registration in early March.

Revelstoke Bee See

Revelstoke Bee See is our new educational bee hive! Our bee hive will be offered as an informative tool for our community to use in order to increase the awareness of pollinators. Our local beekeeper, Ron Glave will be hosting tours all summer long so our community can meet their new bee neighbours. Groups of all ages are encouraged to come out to learn all about honey bees, how they make honey, and why bees are so important to us. We can provide bee suits for our visitors (including child sizes) during their visits.

If your group is interested in arranging a visit to Revelstoke Bee See, please email info@revelstokelocalfood.com
