THE FOOD COMMONS: A community growing project.

The Local Food Initiative (LFI) has partnered with the Indigenous Friendship Society of Revelstoke (IFSR) to develop a 1.8 acre plot of urban land into an educational food project at Powerhouse Road. The project will launch in 2025!

VISION

The Food Commons is an educational and community farm that honors Indigenous foodways and supports food security for present and future generations.

MISSION

The IFSR and LFI are working together to restore 1.8 acres of land into a welcoming gathering space where we grow, harvest and share food and knowledge. The Food Commons will host financially sustainable programs to ensure the long-term resilience of the project.

VALUES

We will achieve the vision & mission of the Food Commons project through the following:

  • Humility - A profound relationship with the land, plants, animals, and ecosystems that is rooted in gratitude, reciprocity, and balance.

  • Collaboration - Embrace all who want to contribute to the Food Commons in the spirit of community.

  • Equity - Offering equal access to a sustainable and just food system for all Revelstokians.

  • Stewardship - Care for and deep connection to the land.

  • Curiosity - Open to learning and unlearning.

  • Celebration - Of the rich connection to food in Revelstoke that brings us together.

  • Courage - To be innovative & embrace new ways of knowing.

greenhouse in Revelstoke?

A Greenhouse Feasibility Study was conducted this summer to look into the viability of developing a greenhouse for our community.

A greenhouse is a great way to have the community involved all year round, potentially provide opportunities for small-scale farmers to sell their harvests, and most of all to increase our food security!

Check out the feasibility study here. If you are interested in hearing more, please contact info@revelstokelocalfood.com.

ABOUT Food Security

tools.png

Food Security, a term that encompasses our access to healthy, sustainable and affordable food, has become an important topic in recent years. There is a growing trend towards all things local, fresh and home-grown. The LFI sees the potential to nurture this trend as it benefits our health, our economy, our earth and our culture. Through education, facilitation and advocacy we will empower the community to enhance local food production and utilization.
